The province is announcing the new law amid concerns from teachers and parents. Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides said cellphones help with learning but can also be a source of cyber threats. Students using their phones for health purposes, such as monitoring blood sugar levels, will be exempted from the ban, the minister said.Apart from the phone ban, he also announced that access to social media sites would be restricted in schools. School boards can determine how to implement the new rules. But Demetrios said those policies must be in line with provincial standards.Quebec, Ontario and BC have already banned cell phones in schools.
