Residents of Edmonton still remember the tornado that hit Edmonton on July 31, 1987. 37 years ago, many people have experiences that are forever etched in their minds. 27 people lost their lives due to the strong cyclone which reached a speed of more than 400 km per hour. Of the 27 deaths, 12 were in East Edmonton and an industrial area in Strathcona County. The other 15 were at the Evergreen Mobile Home Park in northeast Edmonton.
The storm was accompanied by heavy hail. The hailstones were the size of a tennis ball. The cyclone was followed by heavy rains and flooding across the city. The Edmonton Tornado Atlas estimated that about 300 people were injured and about 300 homes were completely destroyed. Known as Black Friday in Edmonton, the tornado was the second deadliest and deadliest in Canadian history.
A monument stands in Hermitage Park in the city to commemorate those who lost their lives in the cyclone.
