When asked about the worst period in recent times, the first thing that comes to everyone's mind is the time of the Covid-19 pandemic. While it is true that this period brought with it challenges and losses that have not been experienced even in our distant memories, historians claim that there have been more terrible years in human history. It was not the Black Death of 1349. Not the 1918 flu pandemic that claimed 50 - 100 million lives. Historians describe AD 536 as the worst year in history.

In AD 536, Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Asia experienced a strange and terrifying fog. History.com (History.com) reports that the 18-month-long fog cast a terrible darkness over the land. Due to the unusual fog, the sun was obscured during the day and this caused the earth's temperature to drop. With that, agricultural crops perished and many people succumbed to death due to starvation and various epidemics. 536 AD was indeed a dark age.
