Study visa approvals for Indian students aiming to study in Canada are expected to drop by 50 percent this year, according to reports. The ApplyBoard report points to stricter immigration policies and higher financial requirements as the main reasons behind the decline. These declining approvals are a result of the Canadian government's efforts to reduce the number of foreign students. According to the report, the approval of study permits from India has halved in the first half of this year. In 2023, 436,000 study visas were approved. But this year it has dropped to 231,000.
A 39 percent drop in global applications for study permits has been reported in 2024 compared to 2023. Out of 5.5 lakh international students in Canada in 2022, 2.26 lakh are from India. 3.2 lakh Indians are working as gig workers in Canada on student visas.
