Beirut: The death toll from Israeli airstrikes in and around Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, has reached 31. The dead included 7 women and 3 children. 68 people were injured. 23 people are missing. Friday's attack was the heaviest Beirut has seen since the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war.
Israel claims that the building where the secret meeting was held was destroyed and 11 Hizbullah operatives, including top leader Ibrahim Akeel and Commander Wahbi, were killed. Hezbollah spokespersons responded that 15 operatives were killed. Hizbullah's assessment is that it is a retaliation for the bomb attack on military bases in northern Israel. 740 people have been killed so far in the clashes that have been going on for 11 months in parallel with the Israel-Hamas war.
