Bengaluru: TPG Nambiar, the founder owner of BPL, a leading electronics manufacturing brand, has passed away. He was 96 years old. He passed away this morning at his residence on Lavelle Road, Bengaluru. He had been resting for some time due to old age related ailments. He is the son-in-law of former Union Minister and industrialist Rajeev Chandrasekhar.
BPL was once the dominant brand among Indian consumer electronics brands. TPG Nambiar, a native of Thalassery, started British Physical Laboratories India Private Limited in 1963. In collaboration with the British company of the same name, the beginning was to manufacture small electronic devices for the Indian Defense Forces.
After the 1982 Asian Games, BPL saw the demand for color TVs and video cassettes in the Indian market and ventured into manufacturing those devices. Later, BPL became a giant in the Indian electronics manufacturing industry till the 1990s. Faced with fierce competition from foreign companies since liberalization in the 1990s, BPL later shifted its focus to the telecommunications and mobile sector.
BPL is currently focusing on the manufacturing of medical electronics. Several industry leaders have paid tributes to TPG Numbyark through social media. His relatives informed that his cremation will be held tomorrow between 11 am and 12 pm at the Kalpalli crematorium near Baiyappanahalli terminal in Bengaluru.
