Melbourne: Australia to clamp down on social media use by children aged 16 and under. The government has initiated measures to ban social media for children of this age. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a press conference that social media is harming children and that the necessary steps have been taken to ensure that the law comes into force after a year.
The Prime Minister clarified that even if there is consent of the parents, no relaxation will be given under the law. Social media platforms will be responsible for demonstrating that they are taking the necessary steps to prevent children from accessing social media. He clarified that neither the parents nor the children will ever be held responsible in this regard. Anthony Albanese shared these things by referring to the age limit for buying alcohol.
The Australian government has previously discussed introducing legislation to ban children from using social media by the end of the year. After the completion of the verification technology trial, the government will take further steps in this regard. Once the government directive is received, the social media giants will have to introduce an age limit in the case of children.
