New Delhi: Delhi Police has busted a racket for providing fake Indian passports to foreigners. 42 people of various nationalities have been arrested. Of these, 13 are Bangladeshi nationals, Delhi Police said on Friday.
Of those arrested, 23 were working as agents. The rest were travellers. Their activities were to forge Indian passports after illegally crossing the Indian border from neighbouring countries, Delhi Police Deputy Commissioner Usha Rangnani said. Apart from the 13 Bangladeshi nationals arrested, four people from Myanmar, three who had come to India from Nepal and one Afghan national have also been arrested. The police also found that all of them had obtained fake Indian passports to travel abroad illegally.
Nine of the arrested agents are from Bengal. Four people were arrested, three from Delhi, one each from Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Punjab, Odisha and Rajasthan. They initially prepared documents like birth certificates in India for foreigners. Later, they used this to obtain other documents. They submitted all these documents and obtained passports.
The operation was centered around West Bengal, Delhi and Maharashtra. Earlier, a fake Indian passport was recovered from a Bangladeshi national who had returned from the UAE. Following this, a gang was arrested for providing fake Indian passports to Bangladeshi nationals.
