Immigration Minister Mark Miller has called for immigration control in the country. The surge in immigration to Canada from other countries has changed Canadians' decades-old perceptions of the benefits of immigration, Minister Mark Miller said. He said some discipline is needed in the immigration system to get the country back to normal.
In 2024, Miller limited the number of student visas. The number of permanent residents who are planning to enter the country is also being reduced. Making work visas more difficult to obtain and temporarily suspending most private refugee sponsorship applications are part of the restrictions on immigration. The record immigration surge boosted population growth by more than three per cent in 2023, double the average for the previous decade. There are approximately 250,000 refugee claims awaiting processing by the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada. The largest number of claims in 2024 came from India, followed by Mexico.
