Japan's leading automakers Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Corporation are merging, and the two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding, initiating merger talks. The decision is to sign a final merger agreement in June and complete the merger in 2026, international media reports citing Japanese media. The memorandum of understanding was signed between Honda's Toshihiro Mibe and Nissan's Makoto Uchida. The two companies plan to form a holding company. A Honda representative will be the president of the new company.
The presidents of Nissan's partner Mitsubishi Motor Corporation arrived at the Japanese Ministry of Transport on Monday morning. The report said the visit was to brief authorities ahead of merger talks. The two companies aim to complete the merger agreement and list the holding company on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in August 2026.
