Edmonton Police are warning of a rise in mobile phone fraud. As of December 18, police said they had received 91 such scams, with many losing up to $600,000.
The scam begins with a phone call from someone claiming to be affiliated with Telus. They will then try to convince you to purchase one of their promotional offers. If you agree to buy, they will ask for personal details such as account passwords, security codes and other information. They will then use this to log into the victim’s cell phone provider account and order a new phone to be sent to the victim’s home address. Once the phone arrives, it will say something is wrong with the phone and ask for it to be sent back to the address they provide. The Edmonton Police Financial Fraud Unit has advised anyone who has fallen victim to this scam or has provided personal information to report it to police immediately.
