Patient dies while waiting for care in Winnipeg emergency room

A patient died while waiting for care in the emergency room at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. The patient had been waiting for eight hours for treatment.

A middle-aged man was brought to the emergency room by ambulance after midnight, said Dr. Shawn Young, chief operating officer of the Health Sciences Centre. His condition deteriorated before 8 a.m. and he was transferred to another room for care. The patient later died, Dr. Shawn Young said at a news conference. Dr. Shawn Young said the patient was initially assessed and some tests were done as needed. However, he said he would investigate whether there were any lapses in hospital protocol.
