Heart attacks among snow shovelers in York Region; 34 people hospitalized in Newmarket

Newmarket South Lake Health reported that people who were shoveling snow from driveways and other areas after a snowfall suffered heart attacks. They were hospitalized in Newmarket. According to South Lake Health, the heart attacks occurred between February 12 and 20. Officials say the heart attacks were caused by standing in extreme cold for long periods of time to shovel snow. The heart attacks occurred in people in their 40s, 50s and 60s. Health officials said they were from York Region.

February is Heart Month in Canada. The Heart and Stroke Foundation says that heart attack cases increase by 10 percent during the winter months. So this is a month to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining heart health. The foundation also said that everyone should try to raise awareness about the importance of heart health.
