The City of Calgary has introduced a new law that will restrict tow truck operators from entering accident sites within Calgary’s city limits. Tow truck operators who enter an accident site without permission will be fined, officials said. City council passed amendments to the Calgary Traffic Bylaw and Street Bylaw on Tuesday.
Under the new law, towing service vehicles will not be able to enter or operate within 200 metres of a collision or other accident in the city without the permission of emergency responders, the vehicle owner or operator. Officials also said that tow truck operators who break the law and enter without permission will be fined $10,000. The new measure follows findings that tow truck operators pose a safety risk to the public and cause significant financial losses to accident victims. The city said the 200-metre buffer zone provides safety for individuals at the scene and helps ensure emergency assistance.
The Alberta Motor Association responded that the new law is welcome. The AMA said the changes will go a long way in controlling tow truck drivers who unnecessarily charge people.
