Police are working to provide security for the 3,400 people living near the Rocky Mountains when the G7 summit takes place in Kananaskis, Alberta, this summer. About 70 official guests, 2,000 delegates and 1,400 journalists are expected to attend the summit in Calgary and Kananaskis, according to a report by the Calgary Police Commission. Calgary Police Service Superintendent Joe Brar said at a news conference that this is a high-security event and it is essential to be aware of the risks and operate without any security breaches. The summit will be held from June 15 to 17.
The Calgary Police Service said it will support security efforts across Canada, including from forces in Edmonton, Winnipeg and Vancouver. Authorities said a large portion of Kananaskis, including trails and day-use areas, will be closed during the summit. The RCMP said the force will be alert to modern security threats such as drones. The RCMP announced that a 30 nautical mile no-fly zone will be enforced around Kananaskis and there will be temporary restrictions around Calgary International Airport.
