This year's flu season is the most severe in 15 years. When the flu is severe, it increases the risk of rare and life-threatening brain complications in patients, especially children, according to US health experts.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 19,000 people have died from the flu so far this winter, including 86 children. Nine of the children who died reportedly suffered complications from brain infections. The CDC has also asked state health departments to investigate any additional cases.
