Alabama: Three-time Grammy nominee and neo-soul singer Angie Stone, a member of the pioneering female hip-hop group Sequence, has died at the age of 63.

Stone died in a car crash early Saturday morning while returning from a concert in Montgomery, Alabama, the previous night, her representative Deborah R. Champagne said; Stone was scheduled to perform in Baltimore on Saturday night, and Stone's daughter Diamond confirmed her mother's death on social media.

"Angie Stone's voice and spirit will live on forever in the hearts of those she touched," Stone's publicist said in a statement. “The family will announce details about the memorial service at a later date.”

Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone (then known as Angie B) founded the Sequence in 1979 with Cheryl “The Pearl” Cook and Gwendolyn “Blondie” Chisom. They became the first female hip-hop act to be signed to Sugar Hill Records. The Sequence released three albums before disbanding in 1985.

In a video posted on social media a week before her death, Stone said she had “a big smile on my face” about her upcoming plans.
