A study has found that over 70% of Indian couples prefer to sleep separately. The trend of sleep divorce is increasing among Indian couples, the study says. India leads the way in sleep divorce, with 78% of couples adopting the practice. It is followed by China (67%) and South Korea (65%), according to ResMed's 2025 Global Sleep Survey.
In the UK and US, half of couples prefer to sleep separately, while 50% prefer to sleep separately. While sleeping separately may seem unnatural, for many it has become a necessary step to improve sleep quality and overall relationship health. The researchers say that the reasons for this increase in the trend are the partner's snoring, loud breathing and screen use in bed.
Experts say that co-sleeping has its own benefits. Sharing a bed with a partner causes the release of the love hormone oxytocin. This helps reduce depression, anxiety, and stress.
Stress, anxiety, and financial pressures are major causes of poor sleep.
Lack of sleep can lead to serious health risks. Long-term sleep deprivation increases the risk of cognitive decline, mood disorders, anxiety, and depression. Sleep apnea can lead to heart failure, diabetes, and stroke.
